I Won’t Let You Leave

I won’t let you leave. Choose one to die.

Nancy scrutinized the neon green message on the screen hoping it would reveal the secret to finally leaving the fluorescent lit dungeon. She nervously picked the dried blood from her finger nails and tried to not think about Laurie’s putrefying body in the corner. It served as macabre furniture in an otherwise empty, white tiled room.

She had to constantly remind herself that Laurie’s death wasn’t her fault. They had spent three tense days locked in that horrible room before Laurie finally cracked up and lunged at her — desperate to get out.

Nancy could still hear the hollow crack of her skull and the shininess of the crimson blood that oozed onto the shattered alabaster tile.

The silver lining was that she was going to be okay. The rules were written plainly on the wall.

I won’t let you leave. Choose one to die.

And she chose. It wasn’t her fault. It was self defense. Yet she was still trapped.

She banged on the thick metal door.

“WE PLAYED YOUR STUPID GAME! NOW LET ME OUT OF HERE!”

She rapped on the door until her knuckles bled. The fresh blood mixed with the old. She dropped to her knees and sobbed.

A fuzzy voice crackled over the intercom.

“You know what you need to do, Nancy.”

“I… I didn’t…”

“But you did.”

“She was going to leave. I had to. I loved her so much… I came home and she was packing her things in our bedroom. She said she couldn’t stand being with me anymore. As she was leaving the bathroom with the rest of her things, I pushed her to the tile and screamed,  ‘I won’t let you leave…’”

Laurie’s body, the neon sign, and the bloody cracked tile disappeared. The door to the dungeon opened, and two men with guns entered.

“You have the right to remain silent…”
